Bishop Leonard F. Hatfield
HATFIELD, THE RIGHT REVEREND LEONARD F., M.A., D.D. - 81, of Port Greville,
Cumberland County died Friday, September, 14, 2001 at Highland View Regional
Hospital, Amherst. Born in Port Greville, he was the son of the late Otto and
Ada (Tower) Hatfield. Bishop Hatfield pursued his early education in Port
Greville and in Amherst. In 1940, he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts
from the University of King's College in Halifax. He was awarded the degree of
Master of Arts in 1943 and an honorary doctorate in 1956, both from King's.
Bishop Hatfield was ordained priest in 1943, and appointed Priest Assistant at
All Saints Cathedral in Halifax. In 1946 he was appointed Rector of Antigonish
where he served until appointed Assistant Secretary, Council for Social Service
of the Anglican Church of Canada in 1951. Three years later he became the
General Secretary of the Council for Social Service. In 1961, he returned to the
parish as Rector of Christ Church, Dartmouth. One decade later he became Rector
of St. John's Church, Truro. In 1969, he had also been appointed Canon of All
Saints Cathedral. In 1976 he was elected the Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of
Nova Scotia and in January, 1980 was installed as Bishop of Nova Scotia. In 1984
he retired from this position. During his long and outstanding career, Bishop
Hatfield has served both church and community with distinction. Within the
Diocese of Nova Scotia he served as Chairman of the Diocesan Council, Chairman
of the Corporation of the Anglican Diocesan Centre, Chairman of the King's
College Board of Governors and numerous other committees. He has been extremely
active at the national level of the Anglican Church of Canada serving variously
on the Program Committee of the General Synod, the Unit of Public Social
Responsibility, the Anglican Consultative Council and in 1980 represented his
denomination at the International Bishop's Seminar in Rome. He was also
Organizing Secretary of the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund and
convened the Primate's Task Force on the Ordination of Women to the Priesthood.
One of his major concerns throughout his ministry was the ecumenical movement
and inter-church cooperation. Such concerns were served by his membership on the
Council of the Churches on Justice and Corrections, various committees of the
World Council of Churches and his leadership in the Vanier Institute of the
Family. Bishop Hatfield served on the Board of Governors of Atlantic School of
Theology, was a member of the local Committee of Ten exploring union between the
Anglican and United Churches and served as President of the ecumenical agency,
the Institute of Pastoral Training. Bishop Hatfield is survived by his
step-mother, Isabel Hatfield, Parrsboro; sisters, Constance Vitali, and her
husband, Jack, of New Westminster, British Columbia; Jessie Crosby, and her
husband, Harold, Halifax; Mary Trefry, and her husband, Cedric, Port Greville;
several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ellen and Anna.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at Holy Trinity
Anglican Church, Fox River, Archbishop Arthur G. Peters and Rev. Robert Richmond
officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. A Diocesan Service will be held in
All Saints Cathedral, Halifax at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Fox River. Arrangements
entrusted to Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. |
