CANNING, Geraldine M. – 74, of Parrsboro passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro with her family and friends by her side. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Raynold and Gladys (O’Rourke) Melanson. In 1957, she married her childhood sweetheart, “Aubie”. She was a graduate of The Grace Maternity Hospital, Halifax. She nursed during the 1956 and 1958 Springhill Mine Disasters at All Saints Hospital, Springhill; and her nursing career spanned 38 years at the South Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Parrsboro. Geraldine served on the Town of Parrsboro Recreation Committee, the Parrsboro School Reunion Committee, and contributed greatly to achieve financial support for several Grade 12 class trips. As the wife of the Fire Chief, she was also a member of the Parrsboro Volunteer Fire Department and raised funds for the new Parrsboro Fire Hall in 1971. She enjoyed playing cards, crafts and walking the beach at Two Islands, where the family delighted in their summer home. The greatest joy of her life was her three grandchildren, Josh, Tessa and Adam. To all who knew her, she warmly welcomed them to her home; Geraldine never met a stranger. She was loved by everyone she met as she had such a kind and caring way about her. Her popularity goes back to when, as a teenager, she was voted Parrsboro’s most popular girl; she has lived up to her reign all these years.
