1920 - 2017

  Wheaton, Sr., E. William, ‘Bill’ - Age 96, of Parrsboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2017 at the Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building in Halifax. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Walter and Lottie (Webster) Wheaton. Bill grew up in his home town where he participated in many sports throughout his school years. During wartime, he enlisted in the R.C.A.F. where he served from 1941-1945. Following the war, Bill and his wife Irene returned to Parrsboro where they operated Wheaton's Restaurant from 1945 until it was destroyed by fire in 1962. He then opened Wheaton's Homemade Candy. Following this adventure, he established Wheaton Sales Agencies with his son Billy, representing manufacturers throughout the Atlantic provinces. Bill was very involved in the community which he loved and served so well. He was a member of the Parrsboro Town Council, School Board, Hospital Board, Chamber of Commerce, Board of Trade, Legion Branch #45, Parrsboro, the Parrsborough Shore Historical Society, was an Honorary Member of the Parrsboro Golf Club, was a founding member of the Parrsboro Art Guild and was a Ham Radio Operator (VE1CFK). Bill had many hobbies which included hunting, fishing, duck carving, oil painting and was an avid sportsman. He remained active in his community into his later years and was most often seen at the Parrsboro Golf Course or The Ottawa House (formerly owned by his parents), regaling friends and tourists with local history and humorous stories. As Parrsboro's leading “Ambassador”, he touched the lives of many and his legacy will live on, especially in his cards depicting ‘Wheaton's Homemade Candy’ which is carried by tourists throughout the world! He was at his best spending time with his family. He is survived by his much loved daughter-in-law, Brenda (Burke) Wheaton; grandsons, Ryan (Tanya St-Pierre), Dartmouth; Patrick (Tahara MacDonald), Bedford; great-grandchildren, Alex and Ella; his special nieces, Lynne Baber, Debby and Kathy Breau, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Irene (Breau) in 2010; his daughter, Brenda Joyce, in infancy; and his son “Billy” earlier in 2017; a brother, Donald and a sister, Marie Reid. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2017 in St. George's Anglican Church, Parrsboro, the Rev. Dr. Brian Spence officiating. Burial will take place in St. George's Anglican Cemetery. Reception to follow in the church hall. Memorial donations may be made to the Parrsboro Golf Club for the Construction of the New Maintenance Facility.
