Iona Baxter


Baxter, Iona G. – 97, of Halifax passed away Friday, February 23, 2007 at Maplestone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in Parrsboro, she was a daughter of the late Capt. Claude and Gertrude (Gibson) Durant. In 1932, she married Reginald A. Baxter. They lived in Pictou, Sackville, NB, Ottawa, Parrsboro and moved to Halifax in 1949. Her summers were always spent at the family cottage in Parrsboro. For many years she was a volunteer at the Activity Centre for mentally challenged adults in Halifax. Iona was a founding member of the Westmount Bridge Club and former member of Westmount I.O.D.E. She was a member of Trinity United Church, Parrsboro and later Bethany United Church in Halifax. She loved and was loved and will be missed by many family, friends and caregivers. She is survived by daughters, Sally-Anne Wagstaff (John R.), Rothesay, NB; Shirley Kaulbach (Dexter), Halifax; Jill Greenham (Terry), Bedford; Beverley Baxter, Rothesay, NB; 7 grandchildren, Wendy Lo (Frank), Halifax; J.D. Wagstaff (Kathy), North Kentville; Kathy Kaulbach (Janie Greeney), Halifax; Jim Kaulbach (Sue), Grand Pre; Heather Kaulbach (Cyndie Flett), Ottawa; Nancy Iona Greenham, Toronto; Peter Greenham (Ellie), Parrsboro; 13 great grandchildren, Katie, Jennifer and Jamie Lo, Halifax; Keltie and John Wagstaff, North Kentville; Kelly Westheuser, Halifax; Ben Westheuser, Halifax; Kurt Kaulbach, Grand Pre; Joshua Flett, Ottawa; Paige Iona Kash, Toronto; Ryan, Tyler and Lexie Greenham, Parrsboro; a great-great grandson, Cole Elliott, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald A. Baxter in 1975; a sister, Pauline Durant. For the past four years, she was blessed to have the tender loving care of staff at Maplestone, particularly those on Ringdale Court. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2007 at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, Rev. Sandra Riddell officiating. Burial to follow in the Parrsboro United Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Ship’s Company Theatre, Parrsboro, the Bill Lynch Memorial Fund or to South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation, Parrsboro.
