John Andrew Parker
1933 - 2022
Parker, John Andrew, P.Eng. - Age 89, of Dartmouth passed away peacefully on Monday, December 5, 2022 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Springhill in 1933, he was the son of the late Andrew Faulkner and Vilda Natalie (Cavanaugh) Parker. John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean (Fraser) Parker; a niece, Pam Duguay, Nanaimo, B.C. He was predeceased by sisters, Florence Foster and Marion Eva Parker (in infancy); nephews, Stephen and Peter Foster. John grew up in Parrsboro, and later went on to graduate from the University of New Brunswick with a B.Sc in Mechanical Engineering. During his academic Summers, he worked for Noranda Mining at their Normétal mine, for Algoma Steel at their Helen Mine, and surveying for the Nova Scotia Department of Highways. Upon graduation from UNB, John joined the Nova Scotia Power Commission at their Trenton Generating Station, later to be transferred to Halifax. He held various positions within the NS Power Commission including Director of Staff Services, Advisor to Management in Nuclear Power, and retired as Manager of the Thermal Generating Dept. During his career with NS Power, John held memberships in various organizations, including Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, Engineering Institute of Canada, Mining Society of Nova Scotia, Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Canadian Nuclear Association, Halifax Board of Trade and the Oil Burning Utility Association. Following his retirement from NS Power, John and Jean spent their winters in the St. Petersburg, Florida region. They took 63 separate cruises, mostly on Celebrity Cruise Line and Holland America ships, and most often with the Glennie’s of Toronto. The family would like thank the medical and nursing staff of Dartmouth General Hospital (5 East). In keeping with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held in the Advocate Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations to a charity of your choice.
