D. Lawrence Hanna

Hanna, D. Lawrence ‘Laurie’ ‘Pappy’ – Age 88, of Lakelands passed away peacefully on Friday, March 10, 2023 at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro surrounded by family. Born in Lakelands, he was the son of the late Earle and Marjorie (Dickinson) Hanna. Laurie received his early education at a one room schoolhouse in Lakelands, attended Parrsboro Regional High School, and then completed a business program in Amherst. Following the death of his father in 1955, Laurie took over the family farm and lumber business at the age of 21. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge #67, a member of Horticulture Nova Scotia, Maple Producer’s Association of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Forest Products, Wild Blueberry Association of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, Nova Scotia Cattlemen’s Association, and member of the Trinity United Church, Parrsboro. Laurie enjoyed time spent at the camp and especially in the sugar woods, but most of all he enjoyed time spent on the farm. He always took time to check on his neighbours and family, and never missed an opportunity to tease or torment. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Antrim) Hanna; sons, Stephen (Nancy), Michael (Debbie), Jeffrey (Lynn); grandchildren, Clark (Shannon), Lori Beth, Amber (Brian), Brittany, Krystal, Kimberley; great grandchildren, Violet, Lincon, Jack and Will; a sister, Marion Kyle; niece, Janet (Dana); Jocelyn; nephew, Billy (Lori); great-niece, Katharine. He was predceceased by his brother-in-law, Bill Kyle. In keeping with Laurie’s wishes, no services will be held. Memorial donations to the Victorian Order of Nurses (Cumberland) or to the South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation.

The family would like to thank the caregivers of Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre and the South Cumberland Community Care Centre for their care, respect and compassion shown to Laurie and his family these past several days.
