Utley R.W. Rector
1929 - 2023

Rector, Utley R.W. - Age 94, of Parrsboro. It is with profound sadness that we, his family, announce his passing on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at the South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Southampton, he was the son of the late Leslie and Eunice (Sherrif) Rector. He enjoyed working in the woods and knew the back roads of Cumberland County off by heart. He joined the military in 1953 and served with the RCEME. The highlight of his military life was serving in Egypt and he had many amazing stories of the people he met and places he travelled while there. He was posted with his family to Germany for four years and retired in 1975 after moving to Parrsboro in the house he built himself with his family. He had a second career as a logging trucker and mechanic, first working with his son, Bill, and then for R.A. Hoeg and Sons. He loved to travel around and took many trips throughout the Maritimes, Ontario and the US, with his wife of 70 years, Zenith and his family. He was known to many for his daily morning walks to the Partridge Island Lookoff, something he did for many years, until he reached his 85th year. He adored and was devoted to his grandchildren, and he was excited about the birth two years ago of his twin great-grandsons. He is survived by his wife, Zenith (Canning) Rector; daughters, Susan Trask (Jerry); Barb Rector (Neil Hammond); a son, Bill Rector (Natalie), all of Parrsboro; a sister, Kathleen Kyle (Charles), Amherst; sisters-in-law, Mary Canning, Parrsboro; J.J. Rector, Etobicoke, Ont.; a brother, Clifford, Amherst; beloved granddaughter, Jennifer Price (Jason), Halifax; grandsons, Andy Rector (Nancy), Whitehorse; Andrew McCulley, Enfield; great grandsons, William and James Rector, Whitehorse; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Luella, Frances, Jessie, Florence; brothers, Ernest, Ross, Donald, Timmy, Jimmy; son-in-law, Wallace Byrne, mother and father in-law, Thelma and Roy Canning. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 2-4, 6-8pm at Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, where funeral service will be held 2pm on Friday, May 5, 2023, Pastor David Forbes officiating. Burial to follow in the Parrsboro United Cemetery. Reception to follow at St. George's Anglican Hall. Memorial donations in his memory may be made to South Cumberland Community Care Centre Foundation or VON (Cumberland).
